How The PS3 Can Beat The Competition This Holiday Season
Gamers, Main, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony September 16th, 2008Well as we all know the recent price drop on the XBOX 360 basically makes it the cheapest
next-gen console on the market, even cheaper than the Wii (the arcade version). This means that the PS3 is the most expensive console right now on the market and what does that mean for Sony? It means a disaster. People do not want to pay for expensive things, especial gaming systems. Yes, the PS3 may be more than a gaming system, but the consumers don’t want to pay a premium for something that will be cheaper latter on in its life span. So what can Sony do to get them out of this hole that they are in for the holiday season? Well its not as simple as cutting the price tag to something cheaper. Sony has already said that they will not be lowering the price any more this year, so that is out of the question. Well what else can they do beside bring out quality games that they hope that will push the system out the retailers doors? Well they will have to do a couple of things to get to that point where the consumer will take the PS3 home.
1. Make a Entertainment and Gaming bundle. Show the consumer that the console is for both media and gaming purposes. Show them that you support both and that you will be pushing both at the same time without problems. Re-assure the consumer by offering them a game that will be a hit this holiday season like: Little Big Planet, Resistance Fall of Man 2, or SOCOM: Confrontation, or even MotorStorm Pacific Rift. This will bring in new buyers to see that the games that are made for the PS3 are good and not as bad as they thought (yes, some do suck). Then also pack in a movie that can show off its Blu-Ray player and show why the PS3 is next gen with it.
2. Price Cuts. Yes you don’t want to do a price cut for the console, but you can cut other prices. Cut the prices on the accessories (especially DS3) and games. Cut those and you will have an advantage, especially in the games area. Show consumers that things will not be as expensive as rival consoles and that the games that are that cheap are worth it.
3. Get the money out of the bank. The games for this year are announced and coming out. What Sony needs to do is go to the bank get money and then call up some game developers and try to get some exclusives. Sony needs to get some more exclusives for their console or even times exclusives because Microsoft has been doing this for a long time and look where it has gotten them. Microsoft got GTA4 DLC, Rock Band 2 Timed Exclusive, and MORE! Sony you need to get more exclusives in bed for the PS3 and you need to take this time and do it. even try to get movie exclusives for the PSN Store and away from the XBOX Live Marketplace. The little things can give you an edge.
4. The last option for winning the holiday season is…a price drop. Sony, you may not want to do one, but if those options above fail then its your last chance to win this holiday season. You need to lower the price as a last resort option to match or get within the range of the XBOX 360 price range. Without it you will stay in dead last while the other consoles will get ahead in sales, making it harder to catch up next year. This may not be what you would like to do, but if all fails, this is a must to stay alive.
If Sony follows these steps, then they might make a dent in the gap of the Wii’s sales and the XBOX 360’s. With the limited Wii supply the Wii may not be that much of a threat, but the lowest priced console, the XBOX 360 might be a big challenge for the PS3 and Sony. Let’s see what happens this holiday season.

you wrote that the PS3 is the most expensive console right now on the market and what does that mean for Sony? It means a disaster. People do not want to pay for expensive things, especial gaming systems. Yes, the PS3 may be more than a gaming system, but the consumers don’t want to pay a premium for something that will be cheaper latter on in its life span why are you just bashing the ps3 & its games what games do xbox have i cant think of 1 decent game came out for it except ninja gaiden 2 & gow2 & thats about it if sony dont want to lower there prices so what it actually works out cheaper to buy a ps3 no subscription no faliure & you dont have buy add ons like hd dvd player to watch hi def films the only reason i think xbox dropped the price * trying to add alot of gimmicks is becuase they have not got any games i mean aint it obvious thats another reason they bribed square & stole ff13 from sony all microsofthave this yaer are sequals no new ips just the gta dlc & a new galo 3 map wow if you just look at the games coming out on ps3 you will see original titles that you just dont see on xbox except gow but thats just 1 game so i dont understand why everyones up on xbox they havent got anything new or original with quality to make it stand out from the rest i wonder 2 things if things were the other way round would you say sony is doing good with the cheapest console on the market? & gow ever came out on the ps3 what would the xbox actually have? & i should now i have all three systems since each of them was released

@ david
It isn’t just bashing, this is an economical advantage and strategy. Microsoft and Sony have been equally stealing ideas and profits from each other for years now, and more than likely the 360 is going to succeed this year.
But if history is going to repeat itself, Sony will be coming out better in ‘09.
Also, you only listed the top games that greatly illustrated the maximum gore potential in a single game.
But I’ll leave it at that.

I disagree. There are several things Sony needs to do if they can’t cut the price; sell two versions of the console. The cheaper $399 version would be just like it is now, but have both Little Big Planet and Motostorm 2 included free. The $499 model would have a bigger HD, an extra DS3, and the following packed in: Little Big Planet, Motostorm 2 and a summer blockbuster like Batman on Blue Ray included free.
Sony HAS to pack in free stuff to raise the value of their console if they won’t lower the price. I hope for their sake they have the foresight to see this. The only good news about Micro$oft’s price drop is that they can’t go any lower with the 360. This is as low as it’ll go for at least another two years or so.

Absolutely,
The 360 at it’s cheapest is a spare model at it’s current, for when the system crashes and you send for it to be repaired. Since there is no memory for it.
If Sony started out with a big 6-game start up pack that featured the biggest hits featured at $500.
Sadly they do not, that would suredly fix thir place at the top.

Sony actually needs to get it through to the customer that they are a wayyyy better value in the long run. That Arcade 360 if you play games online is actually $250 from the get go. Want to add some decent storage? Shell out another $150… Sony really needs to somehow show that these things are standard and free with the PS3. Want wireless out of the box? Get a PS3. Want free online out of the box? Get a PS3. Want the next gen HD video player out of the box? Get a PS3. Want dedicated servers for games? Get a PS3. Want a system that is cheap to upgrade? Get a PS3. Want a cheap way to charge a controller without swapping batteries? Get a PS3. Want a system that you won’t most likely ever have to swap discs during games (Hello Rage), get a PS3.
There are MANY value advantages the PS3 has over the competition. They need to make the consumer look a bit ahead and see this shortcomings the so called cheaper competition is offering.

You are an absolute idiot.
Do you actually think that these ideas will make them win.
There is absolutely no chance in hell.
There are not many games out there that can even compare to the 360 line up and barely any casual games to take on the wii.
I love my ps3 and will be buying games but there is no hope for ps3.
I really wonder what is going on in your mind when you decided to post this. Next you are probably thinking you should be on the Sony Marketing team.
There should be a Stupidity internet filter from guys like this.

@ Rj….you have to feel for guys like him,
personally i have to admit recently i have been trading in my 360 games to get their ps3 counterparts..Bioshock will be the next one, cause the other night i thought id dust off my 360 and play the darkness…..it took me ten minutes just to get the game going, why?, because i tried four times to open the dvd rom drive just to load the disc..then if i press it to close it just doesnt cloes…furthermore after the game loaded i was greeted with a funny multi colour screen as if my graphics driver crashed…only after resetting a further two times could i play…by then i just switched it of switched the ps3 back on and continued with metal gear.
infact the ps3 is not that expensive cause i just upgraded to a 250 gig hdd, the 360 cant even go that big and i can buy two 250 gig hdd for my ps3 for a measely 160gig 360 hdd that is as huge as the moon in orbit….sorry but microsoft screwed every one by launching a cheap crappy product just to be a year ahead…imagine if they gave out a quality product…the console war would be a lot different…..oh yes and the resistance won the wwii….so watch out ps3 is going to be ontop again this gen….theyre doing better than the 360 if you compare overall sales and time since launch!….dont blieve me..think i’m a fanboy…check te numbers…youll see its the truth…but what xbox360 fan will admit that

I’d agree with your part on you saying that Sony should educate people on what the PS3 can really do. Honestly, they should show them how powerful Blu-ray is first of all. Basically, show the picture quality up close in person and far away between a DVD and Blu-Ray disks. Also, they should show them how the PS3 can be used for internet access, gaming (like how good it runs with the settings nice and tweaked on HDMI), and of course music and photos. Not to mention, they should tell them the PS3 has built-in Wi-Fi. But honestly, even more games that are very popular like Halo and GTA4 would really boost sales. Not to mention also, a side by side comparison of the Microsoft XBox 360 Elite vs. the PS3 both running the highest HD settings possible and the same game.
By the way, it cost me 3x more to build myself my current gaming computer than it does to get a PS3
. It runs Crysis like crazy on the max details and full AA.
